CNC machine tool handle is broken, how to carry out preventive maintenance

19-12-2022

The tool holder is a critical interface between the cutting tool and the spindle of the CNC machine tool. The failure of the tool holder will cause the tool holder to fail to function, resulting in shortened tool life and unreliable cutting process.

There are several forms of handle failure:

1. Chips are wrapped around the tool holder, and the tool holder is worn due to the friction between the tool holder, workpiece and chips.

2. The intermittent cutting force causes the surface fatigue of the tool holder.

3. Toolholder deformation caused by cutting force.

4. Cutting heat and cutting temperature lead to phase change of tool holder material structure.

Worn toolholders will not provide good accuracy and will quickly wear out the tool, also result in poor machined surface finish, and may even damage the machine tool spindle. Check the locating cone for wear or damage. Any problem with the taper will directly affect the machining accuracy, if there is any defect in the taper, the tool holder should be replaced.

In order to ensure the performance of the tool handle, the overall environment must be kept clean. Toolholders need to work within micron tolerances, any dirt, dust, oil, chips or other contaminants remaining on the spindle, toolholder taper and front clamping system will cause poor T.I.R. (runout), resulting in Premature wear of tools, tool holders and machine tool spindles.

Regular preventive maintenance is recommended, including regular cleaning and inspection of CNC machine tool spindles and tool holders, which will help improve processing performance.

At the same time, it is recommended to check the T.I.R. of the tool holder assembly regularly to verify whether the tool holder is worn. Proper assembly of the toolholder assembly using specific tool assembly equipment is required to keep the production floor safe and prevent premature failure of the cutting tool.

Reasonable maintenance and use of tool holders is an effective way to improve the production efficiency of CNC machine tools, reduce downtime and reduce the number of unqualified workpieces. Tool holder costs, while only a small fraction of tooling costs, have a large impact on productivity and cost-effectiveness.
